Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) are very much ensconced in their new life in Paris when the third episode of Outlander airs Saturday night on STARZ. But their relationship has yet to recover from the horrible beating and rape that Jamie endured at the hands of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) because Jamie is not quite ready to be touched.

“It was the toughest stuff I’ve probably ever had to film,” Heughan told Parade.com in a one-on-one interview. “It was a great challenge and something I really relished in a dark way. I think all three of us, we love anything where we get to really go to some interesting places or push ourselves as actors, so I was ready for that challenge. I think, Jamie, in the start of the season, he doesn’t do an awful lot. He’s kind of on the periphery, on the fringes, and slowly through Season 1, he reveals more about his character, and to go there at the end of Season 1 was really important, because it then feeds into everything in Season 2, into who he is as a man.”

In the third episode, Jamie’s days and nights are spent ingratiating himself with Prince Charles Stuart (Andrew Gower), while Claire finds solace from their estrangement in her healing skills. The one thing that seems to be going right is their plan to stop the battle at Culloden, in which they are aided by a young pickpocket.

Heughan also spoke to Parade.com about making the transition from Scotland to Paris, working with Outlander creator Diana Gabaldon, his My Peak Challenge charity event and more.

Claire Randall Fraser is no shrinking violet. The Outlander heroine is known for her bold spirit and overwhelming intelligence. She’s used to making herself useful — which is precisely why she’s having trouble adapting to life as an aristocrat’s wife in 1740s Paris. Squabbles with the help aside, Claire wants to get out there and work. Tonight, she’s going to try to make it happen.

Complicating matters further? Claire is pregnant.

Outlander might be a sweeping time travel romance series, but it also uses its outrageous stories to delve into modern debates. Even today, pregnant women and new mothers have to juggle their new roles with their old selves. We asked Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan what they thought of the show’s take on this topic.

“Claire is expected to play a certain role just because of the society they’re in. She’s expected to be this ornamental wife and spend her time gossiping in salons,” said Heughan. “But it does become a bone of contention because as we know Claire is not one to sit idly by. She’s a woman of action.”

Balfe added, “The thing about Claire is she doesn’t see gender in a way. She sees what’s right and what’s wrong. She will do what she wants.“ [Source]

Stewartry actor Sam Heughan this week launched Tartan Tuesday to raise money for the Bloodwise cancer charity.

The Outlander star is urging people to wear tartan attire every Tuesday for a month.

Sam, who plays Jamie Fraser in the hit US television show , launched the project by wearing a bright red tartan scarf.

And he is encouraging people to use #TartanTuesday, @bloodwise_uk and @AmazonVideoUK when tweeting pictures of themselves supporting the initiative.

The New Galloway-born actor said : “It’s really important to raise awareness as blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer and affects people of all ages.

“I hope people enjoy a month of Tartan Tuesday, have fun with it, and that we raise as much money and awareness as possible. I look forward to seeing everyone’s pictures on Twitter!”

Sam has supported Bloodwise for several years and recently promoted a fundraising-fitness initiative, My Peak Challenge , which has boosted contributions to the charity by nearly £200,000 since its inception in 2015.

The charity’s chief executive Cathy Gilman said: “Sam’s dedication to Bloodwise over the years has been absolutely fantastic and we are proud that he has once again chosen to support our charity by fronting #TartanTuesday.”

To donate £3 to Bloodwise, simply text TTBW54 £3 to 70070 or visit JustGiving at: www.justgiving.com/Tartan-Tuesday .

Funds raised will be invested in clinical trials and research into new treatments for blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Tartan Tuesday runs until until May 10. [Source]

Outlander actor Sam Heughan should be extremely familiar with the kilt at this point. The actor has had to wear that particular piece of clothing while filming two seasons of the hit Starz drama, so he knows the ins and outs of the unique garment. In a recent interview, he explained exactly what he doesn’t like about wearing the breezy bottom. You can check out his detailed thoughts, below.

When you sit down on the wet grass and you forget to do the little flick — it’s your bare ass on the ground! Oh, it’s horrible.

This is a pretty graphic conversation, because it causes me to think about Sam Heughan’s derriere, and also because it appears the man may not bother to wear underwear underneath his kilt. That’s a pretty brazen attitude, considering a strong breeze could totally whip that tartan around, even if it is thick material. Maybe he’s simply talking about feeling the ground through thin underwear, but somehow we doubt it.

So, there’s one not-so-great thing about wearing a kilt. However, that is apparently made up for by all of the kilt’s positives, or so Sam Heughan tells People.

Honestly, there’s so many great benefits of wearing a kilt: It’s very free, it’s got its own aeration and they’re very comfortable. But the best part, for me, honestly, is the swing. You know, the pleats you get in the kilt.

Jamie’s kept with the kilt for much of Outlander and the trailer for the series seems to indicate he’ll still wear his tartan during Season 2. That doesn’t mean the character is totally opposed to trousers however, as sometimes we’ve seen Jamie ditch the plaid for more common forms of clothing. Plus, since Paris fashion is going to be at the forefront of the series this time around, it would make sense if we saw him in silk and garb that is outlandish in a different way while spending time working with Bonnie Prince Charlie and the revolution.

In addition, now that we know Sam Heughan’s personal feelings about the kilt, I would like to point out that the kilt has a lot more pros than the stuff other series lead Caitriona Balfe has to and will have to wear on a regular basis, especially this season. For instance, that corset she had on when returning to 1948 in Episode 1 didn’t look particularly appealing. Nor did this monstrosity of an outfit. (Her fake pregnancy belly also came to mind.) When Sam Heughan first visited New York, it was as a teenage backpacker. Now the Scottish actor’s serving as grand marshal of Saturday’s New York Tartan Day Parade, the annual celebration of Scottish heritage and pride in the US. Though the 35-year-old lives in Los Angeles when he’s not filming Starz’s “Outlander” in Scotland, he’s no stranger to this city. Ahead of the drama’s Season 2 premiere (Saturday at 9 p.m.), he tells ANDREA MORABITO how he spends his New York City downtime.

Running in New York is something I really love doing. You get to see the city, you don’t get lost. Running around Central Park is definitely one of the joys. There’s also a great route on the Hudson River.

I love to stay in Soho — I think it’s a really cool area. But also I love walking around the Meatpacking District. There’s loads of cool bars there and places to eat. Chelsea Market — love going there, you can feast your eyes on lots of delicious things.

On the Scottish theme, I love Highlands bar in the West Village. It’s run by a friend of [my co-star] Caitriona [Balfe’s]. It’s a terrific place to call, like a home away from home. You always get a great welcome there and they’ve got a great selection of whiskey. I love Islay whiskeys, so anything that’s really smoky, really peaty. Laphroaig I’ve been known to drink a lot of and have worked with them on a couple of things.

Last time [I was in New York] I saw “Sleep No More.” I’ve always loved “Macbeth,” it’s been part of my upbringing and my education in theater. I knew nothing about that show and just from start to end it was a great experience. And the [Manderley] Bar there is also a lot of fun.

I don’t really know many people [in the city] but … it’s such a transitory place, so there’s always someone around. I met a friend there last time and we did a great walk on the High Line and stopped off at Artichoke, the pizza place. It’s a bit touristy but it’s a great way to see the city from a [different] perspective. [Source]
